Money DIY.

I've been interested in scale patterns now for about a year.. and there are only signs of the scaley pattern growing with the Deco trend starting to show its face around town. Look at this CRAZY COOL diy. (I couldn't make DIY uppercase along with 'CRAZY COOL'.. I would have sounded like I was yelling it.)

Ya, makes some circles and staple 'em together for a quick piece of big-impact art on the cheap. Don't forget the frame, that's an important bit.

Domino Mag is coming back???????!! WHAT?!!

My first reaction was Ohhh hell ya!.. but then I started to think more about it and it made me a little itchy. I like Domino Mag. It was full of applicable, doable, likeable ideas. BUT it was so... Domino-ish. It's easy to pick out a room designed by a devout Domino-follower. GRANTED, the doors were shut in 2009, so who really knows what would have evolved over the last few years. But if I see one more cluster of empty frames or over-sized vintage letter caressing an eating nook wall, I might die. And for some reason, the file box in my mind credits Domino with said movements. I will say there are some beautifully designed moments in Domino (many of which have been written about on this-here blogaroo). With all that said, I'm sure I'll buy the 'Quick Tips' version for $10.99.

Conde Nast, can we please discuss resurrecting House & Garden? Stunner of a good magazine.

Creative flooring.

I'm building a 11' x 11' platform in the shop and want to make the flooring extra special. I'm thinking paint could be fun, or stain a pattern into it.. here are some floors from my due diligence. Which is your fave?

Lovely Lavender

Masculine Master Bath

Gosh that sink is amazing. Also love the shelf with the layered art, it removes the sterility of a bathroom. Although even without that art, this particular bathroom doesn't say sterile at all. The brass fixutre and arched floor mirror are both wonderful.

Take note of the floating vanities in this bathroom, so often we resort to the automatic solution for bathrooms (put the vanity on a wall) becuase 99% of the time it is the right solution, but this is stunning. I'm so glad the designer/architect exploited this opportunity.

Simple and clean. Not fussy but also not under-designed. The lights are the trick here.

What are my take-aways from these bathrooms? I'd like to see a natural wood element, I think it softness the often-cooler palette that a masculine space will have. I also like a darker stone element (floor maybe?). A white square sink is a must-have, maybe a counter sink or an undermount depending on requirements. And also a small mosaic stone addition, loving hexagons these days...

I'll post my mood board for this space as soon as I finish 'er up..

Pretty Kitchen.

I wanted to point out how fabulous this kitchen is, in case you didn't notice- however it might be impossible to not notice how fabulous it is. But I wanna talk about it..

A really important thing to mention here is the floor, porn for a designer for sure, lovelovelove. The black lower cabinets anchor things, while the white uppers prevent the whole space from being too heavy and confined feeling (see how different colored cabinets are TOTALLY doable). The rustic table adds vintage charm, and the lantern combined with the stone floor makes the space feel outside-y, which wins big bonus points for me. It's all so well done. Hip hip hooray to the designer for hitting a home run.

To Faux or Not to-Faux.

This is kind of a tricky subject. While I want to be a snob and say faux-flowers are at the top of the designers Don't-Do list, in the same breath I think, who has the time (or money) to keep fresh flowers around all the time?

I do splurge on the real buds, but I often find myself using high quality faux florals for projects and in my own home. Don't get me wrong, running to the local craft store and buying roses made of plastic with fake dew drops is not something I endorse. But there are lots of high quality florals out there that can stand-in when the real ones aren't around, or let's face it, when we don't want to spend the moola on fresh cut friends.

Something else I'd like to mention here is that if you can afford to have the realisies in your kitchen all the time, heck ya, do it. Nothing (not even a good faux) will replace the mood-enhancing benefits of seasonal flowers. And flowers don't have to be over-the-top, some of the best flowery moments are as simple as a single stem in a tiny bud vase, not expensive (perf in a bathroom or powder room, this is such a nice touch in fact that if you are throwing a party, a little bloom in the powder room carries major design-points).

What I'm really trying to say here is that greenery is an important design detail, but does it have to be real? I'm not so sure, I want to say yes, but my real answer is no.. not if you get the high quality faux florals. Do beware of fake dew-drops though, that's automatic disqualification. The best trick to pull off good looking faux florals? Keep it simple. The more extravagant, the less believable.

Emerald City

I use to be able to claim the Emerald City (Seattle, for those of you who may not know its nickname) as my home. Now I'm a little farther south in Portland, Oregon but that doesn't mean my love for emerald green has gone south too. Lately especially I've been honing in on deep emerald green. Have a look at the luscious green velvet drapes and sofa(s) in this AD space..

I'm glad they are using that punch of blue, otherwise it wouldn't look updated enough (it could use a schoch more updating too, but who's counting?).

I can't seem to get enough emerald green right now.. I keep trying to use Osborne & Little's Jewel of Spring...

I have a fun project coming together in Las Vegas, where the client has requested a fun and energetic (Las Vegas apropo) space. I've decided wallpaper on the walls is a go for sure. But that leaves the ceiling plane high and dry (and white). I could paint the ceiling.. or I could paper that too. ohhhhh. fun. Let's have a look at some papered ceilings..

I think my conclusion is that if I choose paper for the ceiling, it has to be only coordinating with the wall, not the same paper. (or vice versa, I could do a bold ceiling, and then the walls could be a smaller scale or more subtle..). I'm gravitating towards Cole & Son papers, love them, the colors are so saturated and patterns perfectly modern.

(ps. I have a wall in the shop papered from the Contemporary 1 book, in the Orchid pattern, in the darkest blue with the black flowers. And guess what. It's a show-stoppah.)

What do your throw pillows say about you?

I've been selecting pillows for the store and it occurred to me that the kind of throw pillow you have resting on your sofa is a direct reflection of your personality..

For example, do you like pillows that are solid-colored with a discreet self-welt (that's when the trim is the same as the body of the pillow)? like this one:

If this is your fave pillow of the bunch I'd go out on a limb and say that you gravitate towards modern, clean lines, have a fear of nick-nacks and include muted color palettes in your design approach. You may have been called a clean-freak before.

Or do you like a bolder colorful print that makes a bit of a statement?

You aren't afraid to take a few risks and I bet you have an accent wall (or maybe an entire room) somewhere in your house that is a bright, bold color. You love a glass of vino and chatting with friends.

Neither of those two really your style? Enter the trendy but conservative throw pillow:

Donning a print, albeit a muted, nearly-neutral palette, means that you like new things to freshen up your home but are happy to stick with a flexible color palette. I'd wager that your sofa is a classic shape and color that can carry itself through many-a-design phases.

Love the paring of the highly textured hay floor and burlap drape with the impeccably tailored and brightly colored uniform.

Aren't all these mysterious and colorful circus photos fun! I especially love that they feel very 'grown-up circus' instead of the traditionally juvenile vibe.

Now the room inspired by the vintage/colorful/whimsical theme, and note, a circus theme does not mean it has to be a children's room..

Too much fun, adding little stripe is like adding a little friendlienss. And not to mention the amazing red chandelier...

HOT: updated chevron pattern.

I've been weary of chevron for a while now, and I use to love it oh-so-much, so I hate to say goodbye entirely. As you can imagine, I was quite delighted when I spotted this fresh (almost Missioni-inspired) chevron pattern. The colors are exciting in their graduated pattern and the tight(er) zig-zag also adds some new flair to the ubiquitous pattern.

This is (surprisingly) a stencil.. and I must admit I wouldn't hesitate to give it a shot because it's the least stencil-y looking stencil I've seen in a long time. Buy yours here (UK based just fyi). And do it in gradually changing colors like up there. That's the trick.

...from Market. Crazy, insane SOMUCHTOSEE Market. I saw some good stuff, I'll show you:

This chair was probably 60" tall, love me a little height in a chair. And a modern take on a wingback gets me every time.

I know, I know, I should be a professional photographer right? Well, this mirror was stunning in person, trust.

Probably my fave thing at market. I'm not telling you who is selling it. My secret. (But you are free to walk through 5million SF of showrooms and 42 floors and see if you can find it.)

This was so pretty in real life, it smelled like cedar even though the sales lady told me that it was Fir. I'm not convinced. But it was pretty.

Awww. Global Views. It's like a fancy ZGallerie for designers.

This chair reminds me an awful lot of this Dixon I begged for not to long ago...

And one of the better pillow vendors I've seen in a long time.

He just HAD to have the free bunnies even though there was no room in his luggage..

There's a good chance you will see more than one of these pieces in the new store (don't hold your breath for the bunnies though).

I'm fa-fa-fa-frazzled. My knees and feet and back hurt and the filing system in my brain feels like the Tasmanian devil. Also, I have the temporary website up for the store, so go check 'er out if you like.

I have approximately 4,682, now and will come home with another 1,256. That oughtta do it. And btdubs, I am totally more hacienda. Bring on the texture.

With the adventure of the store, everyday I'm having to research something I know nothing about (I suppose that is obvious with most research..). And today is no different with shopping bags. Of course I want every element of the store to be fun and unique and special. So, with a quick google search for 'creative shopping bags' there are plenty of great ideas, have a look:

Do you think you could do it?

I don't know if I could! That's not true, I could totally do this. But oy vey it'd be hard and panicky.

I'm sure not all of you watch DesignStar (thank goodness HGTV lets you watch online later..) but the basic jist of this challenge is to take a totally white room with really no furnishings to speak of and make it jaw dropping- using only bits and pieces from a store that has nothing to do with design and in two days. Which I've decided really comes down to who can paint the best mural. Because paint is really the powerful tool for this competition.

And while there are some 'outside the (white) box' things going on here, clearly this is related to the well-executed paint.

This challenge always weeds out the designers who can quickly come up with a firm concept and see it through to the end. No easy feat.

I'd definitely go into this assured that I could come up with a radical space, but then I'd be worried I'd end up like this:

Well, my box would never be salmon and pea colored. So I'm not worried mine turning out quite like this.. but just the general haphazard, panic-ridden, incomplete mess. Which is (obviously) without any sort of concept. (I'm sorry Meg, but you didn't like your box either.)

So do you think you harbor the crazy skills it would take to triumph over the white-box challenge! It makes my teeth chatter just thinking about it. But let's be clear, I don't shy away from challenges. So, HGTV, if you'd like to challenge me, I'm game. I just might shake and cry a little through the process. However, a pea-salmon box is not what I would present.

This I can enjoy.

Deco is not my fave era for design, while there are parts of it that I do admire and offer plenty of inspiration, the overall style is not consistent with my own.

But that doesn't mean that I won't end up loving the style as it evolves into today's market and is transformed by many-a-talented designers and interpreters. Much like how I vowed I'd never wear those 'silly looking skinny jeans' and what's my closet overloaded with these days? Ya, those things I said I'd never wear.

Something's fishy around here.

I think it's a sickness. A fish-sickness. I keep buying everything animal-shaped. Horses and fish are my specialty. A few months ago I tried to buy a dining table on CL with a fish base (in the same style as the ones below), I made arrangements to pick it up, and she emailed that she couldn't sell it anymore because she had sellers remorse and there were too many memories. Screw that lady, gimme your table. I didn't get it.

This one is too heavily gilded for me, and the marble top is too much also. Without the heavy base and the marble top it's be right up my alley.

Since that tragic moment I've purchased another one, that happens to be much higher quality, and it's a side table, not a dining table. But either way, I'd buy more if they showed themselves to me.

I don't know much about the history of the fish table, it's Eastern for sure, and I understand it's a dolphin and not a trout. If you know something about it, tell me so I know what I'm lusting after..

Practial Polly: What time is it?

This is going to be an interesting post to write because 99.9% of my posts use images to convey the message.. and it's going to be hard to find the images that go with the discussion here.. So, there might be some filler imagery (because we all know that no post is complete with out pretty pictures).

What I'm going to talk about today is what time of day we use our spaces; more specifically what is the light doing when we're in it?

For example, the morning the light is a cooler than in the late afternoon, so a bedroom full of sunset colors is going to disagree a little with what's going on outside the windows in the morning. A light airy bedroom evokes the light airyness of rolling out of bed at 8 or 9 on a summer day.. (ding! maybe this is why we gravitate towards lighter colors and not because we want it to be a retreat.? just a thought...)

That's not to say that when you use your bedroom it's morning.. if you find yourself sleeping-in because of schedules (or luxury).. maybe your a candidate for a dark bedroom. I've seen plenty-a-dark bedroom that I am in love with. Perfect for the night-owl....

Moving on the the rest of the house.. let's be in the living room next. This room gets used throughout the day, so it's safe to say that it will not benefit from a darker or lighter approach. I find myself in my living room in the late afternoon and evening, so it would be appropriate if the colors in my living room were warmer and deeper like what the natural light is doing at that time (this is heightened if the room is facing west or south- getting the warm late afternoon light). Here is a living room that uses contrast as drama, catering to both lighter and darker moments throughout the day.

Here is a good example of a living room that looks like it doesn't get boatloads of natural light, the mood is comfortable and cozy with the warm wood walls and deeper color scheme.

We use the dining room in the evening. If it's well-enough disconnected from the kitchen and living room, this is a great place to introduce the colors that dusk offers us.. A deep caramel or even Farrow & Ball's Hague Blue would be a dramatic addition (Hague has some of the left-over yellow in it, much like how the sky fades from yellow/orange into the blue). Creating the mood and intimacy here is numero uno priority.

Morocco? Colorful because of the spices and tropical background (the spices are brighter because they are in a tropical climate, making the flora and fauna brighter). We are always influenced by our immediate surroundings.

This is not to say that there aren't a million other great solutions for choosing paint and vibe for a room, but it's been my experience that sometimes picking out colors can be really tough. So taking cues from what's right in front of you is a good place to start when that blank canvas feels, well, too blank.

Side Note:

Something else to remember is that painting a room white will not alone make the room brighter. The best white rooms are ones with A TON of natural light. The room will muddy out quickly if it's painted white and there isn't much natural light. I regularly hear about people say "let's paint it lighter to make it bigger." More square footage is the only thing that makes a room feel bigger. There are of course a few tricks to visually expand a room, but simply painting the walls white is not one of them.

Slivers of Color.

The term "pop of color" has pounded on our eardrums for the better part of a decade or two now (someone please come up with something that means the same thing but sounds less HGTV-ish).. however, this building, with its cantilevered "pops of color" is all kinds of genius. (It seems like this could also be achieved with reflecting a very bright color onto a light/white surface.)

The interior has its own set of rainbow glory + gets to see what the first cantilever looks like..

Ohhh pretty at night.

Uhm, btdub, this is a bank. Pretty cool bank. In Japan.
You won't be seeing your local Wells Fargo add rainbow-bright colors any time soon. I mean I guess never say never, but I doubt it.

A TOUR: WHITEWASH & SUMMER BREEZES

My craving for spaces that are airy and casual has been on the rise for the last few months. I'm sure it is related to the warmer weather and sunny days, but a bright easy space is just so comfortable and cozy.

I am painfully jealous of this situation.

I'm imagining XL french doors that are south-facing and open all day long to a tiny but mature courtyard. There's music playing in the background, maybe Bebel Gilberto.. and guess what. The laundry is done.

I can't tell if those are mirrors or windows flanking the bed, but either way they are delicious. I also love that the bed is against a beam, which would be an unconventional choice, but the symmetrical windows are perfect. (What is on the ceiling? not sure about that.)

Can we talk about the stone dividing situation please??!!! SO good. Or maybe it's concrete. Probably concrete. And the colorful toilet paper is just strange, but intriguing haha.

Wabi-Sabi.

Not the green spicy paste or a fancy sake bomb, but a Japanese concept that means "imperfect or incomplete". The concept is rooted in Buddhism relating to all things being temporary or impermanent.

(This is a pretty rad story actually- and my resource is darn close with Mr. Weiden himself. In the late 80's, Weiden + Kennedy was a small Portland marketing company pressed with a deadline from local-loving Nike. Dan was upset that no one was coming up with good ideas, and in a rage, he said 'just do it'. voila. A slogan of a lifetime is born. It's that easy folks.)

I think of this when there's laundry and dishes to do, and I'm always glad I did it. Because I sure as heck don't want to do it tomorrow.

Japan-based Suppose Design Office designed an indoor/outdoor (I'm unsure what to call it really) cafe in Japan that invites the cars right into the action.

The ultimate drive through.

I wonder if psycholgically even though you know you aren't in the middle of the road if it would affect the experience? I would venture to say that it would be slightly uncomfortable.

Window frames and other details are painted the same yellow that is found in the parking lot.

Practical Polly: Sofa Speak.

Turns out there are quite a few different styles of sofa's out there. Camel back, tight back, skirted, tuxedo.. and the list goes on. To help clarify some of the intricacies of the language of the big upholstered piece you have in your living room, let's discuss their defining factors. I'll (try) to go from most common to least common. I'm sure I'll mess that up tho. So, in no particular order:

We'll find that the most influential part in defining the sofa is found in the back and in the arms.

1) Loose back, Rolled arm.

(Crate & Barrel, Montego sofa.)

It is the most basic of all sofas out there, the arms are rounded or 'rolled' and the cushions on the back and seat are easily flipped around, that's called 'loose'. The variety is often slip covered.

2) Tight back.

(Crate & Barrel, Camden sofa.)

This is a cleaner look because there are no real cushions to speak of in the back, and the seat is often 'tight' as well.

3) Camel back with Scroll arms.

(Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, Belle Sofa.)
This kind of camel does not store water in its hump. The gently curved back is what gives this flavor its name. (And those arms are called "scroll" arms.)

4) Tuxedo

(Martha Stewart, Morgan Sofa.)

Calling a sofa 'tuxedo' means the arms come up as high as the back. We often find a single, long bench cushion.

5) Pillow-Back

(Martha Stewart, Logan Sofa.)
This name is fairly self-explanatory. This particular one has cabriole legs and a rolled arm.

6) Chesterfield (a variation of a tuxedo)

(Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, Belle Sofa.)
The famous Chesterfield means a rolled arm (usually with a nailhead detail), tight seat and tight back, often tufted. This also qualifies as a tuxedo.

7) Shelter Arm

(Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, Liam Sofa.)
The arms are slim and often the same height as the back (yet another variation of a tuxedo). This style is a little more modern than the average tuxedo. Sometimes the arms are made of wood instead of upholstered. It also means the arms are as deep as the overall depth and high as the back.

8) Mid Century

(Crate & Barrel, Petrie Sofa.)
Identifiable by its straight, slim lines and minimal details, this sofa brings the 60's right to your door. Or living room. Often boasting lower heights and slim tapered leg.

Oh but Julie you didn't mention a sectional! Yes, that's right, because I don't like them. I think they're ugs, but quite comfortable I will admit.

Decades of Design: The swinging 1960's.

During this self-righteous decade, furniture took a back seat in comparison to the the social and cultural revolutions that were brewing. Civil Rights, more left-wing views (powered by JFK) and a War in Vietnam that would forever change many lives, were front and center for this decade. Music like the Beatles and events like Woodstock further make this time memorable and infamous. Here are some bullet points about the that cannot go without mentioning:

* Martin Luther King delivered the "I have a dream speech" in 1963. He would later be assassinated in Memphis in 1968.
* JFK Jr. was assassinated in his limo sitting beside his wife in 1963.Lyndon B Johnson replaced him and continued his civil rights efforts.
* USA had 12,000 men in Vietnam by 1962.
* Nuclear war threats were flying across the global conference table.
* Our tootsies touched the moon in 1969.
* Richard Nixon reigns as president at the end of the decade.
* The "big three" auto makers saw their highest sales ever in the 60s.
* Musicians during this era would be forever influential: Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Elvis Presley, Jefferson Airplane, Simon and Garfunkel, Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Johnny Cash are just to name a few!

Now, onto the world of decorating during this time...

We'll see a hefty dose of geometry left over from the 50's, but no one was prepared for the tremendous shift towards pattern and color (those crazy kids!).

DIY: Faux Painting

Before we begin this discussion about faux painting, let's get a few things out on the table; 1) I will not ever recommend any sort of unnaturally weathered finish like color washing or sponging (it's already had its 15 minutes of fame in 1994). And 2) The architecture (or structure of a piece of furniture) REALLY matters with this faux-business. Faux finishes can be a slippery slope that has potential to leave you with a piece that is unacceptable to have out in your home. Faux with caution.

I spotted this emerald-covered book at G'Will a while back and flipped through the 1992 edition of faux painting techniques. Be warned there is a few over the top bits, but also a GREAT tutorial about malachite. Which is why I bought the book.

There is A LOT going on here, and the trompe l'oeil drapes on the crown moulding needs to take a hike. Also the yellow circle bits on the cabinets. And the flash on photographers camera. HOWEVER, the floor is all kinds of delish. I'm thinking about doing a little floor-painting in the store, so I'm all about inspiration for that.

Again the floor is fun, minus the 'marbled' effect, the checkers alone would have been just fine. And the fretwork on the stairs is INCREDIBLE. I'm not sure I've seen railings like that before.

The work above and below I'm not sure should even be called 'faux', because it's straight-up talented art. Now the one above is fake fresco, which is riddled with all kinds of gross icky fakeness in thought, but it really is well done, and like I mentioned, the architecture makes this a believably hold Italian villa. (Please do not try this on a 50's style ranch home. I promise it won't work.)

Stencils and murals don't scream my name, but if I walked into this room, I would be impressed because there was so much work involved, and the theme goes well with the architecture. The ceiling is painted too! Crazytown.

And here is the malachite technique that I bought the book for. If you can read the instructions it tells you what colors to buy and which tools to use. OR you can jump over and check out Bri's INSANE skills at ikea hacks and general amazeballs talent at anything DIY (including a malachite table AND chair.), mostly because you can't tell they're DIY at all. And she will make you laugh. Hard.

I'm highly critical of the "Y" portion of this kind of project, but if I ever get around to painting the lamp I bought with the intentions of malachite-ing, I promise to take pics and put 'em up. Maybe. I might be too ~~lazy~~ busy for a DIY project and then to photograph it/the process and then write about it. But maybe not!

Celeb home: Keri Russell

Aka Felicity. The Brooklyn Brownstone is adorable and livable, two very envy(able) qualities.

Love the shoe cubbies, but c'mon I got a lot more shoes than a few pairs of pumps. A chair in a dressing room or luxurious closet is a must.

A late 1800's fireplace is the perfect accessory to the high ceilings. Along with the chandelier. The tufted ottoman and simple sofa and chairs lighten the formal (but incredible) architecture. (And we mustn't forget the lovely fiddle leaf fig- a staple for every interior.)

The chandelier is making its way around the house, but it's ok because it's such a good mix of industrial and glam. The poppies are an easy and loose arrangement, perfect for reinforcing the casual vibe.

Andddddd my favorite room for like 4,762 reasons. Let's begin: The chair is so cute and cozy in caramel velvet. A basket of towels is a bajillion times better than towel rods. THE DIVIDING WALL IS A DRAPE. Yes, let's take some serious notes about this- this gets heaps of natural light into the bathroom, while making it feel WAY bigger than it really is. This is a triple-win solution. (Don't be shy. If you are worried about someone up earlier than you and showering, try installing a larger picture window and have blinds on the dry side that can close.)

Hip Hotel: The Padre.

Color Radar: Pink & Persimmon

A few months ago I didn't imagine this unlikely combination would be tickling my rods and cones so much but I'm really loving it. I like the bohemian warmth of the orange and the youthful appeal of pink. (does this = young hippie? perhaps.)

This palette happens to be quite flexible too, but beware that if there's not a little black in the mix grounding it all it's going to look too juvenile. (Unless that's the goal, then omit black and juvenile away.)

Practical Polly: How paint color changes in different light.

Every designer will say it is absolutely CRITICAL to test your paint color at home before you commit to the gallon. While it seems like Tawny Truffle is the perfect choice when you're staring at hundreds of paint samples inside at the hardware store, Tawny Truffle at home can quickly look more like dirty mauve, and dirty mauve is not what you wanted.

Years ago I picked up a color guide from Benjamin Moore (psst, a designer secret is that Benjamin Moore has the best selection of colors) and I've saved it just for this one example: The same paint color in three different types of lighting (and I wish it told us what color it was, but it's not noted anywhere).

Direct Sunlight:

"Considered the ideal light source, direct sunlight maintains a neutral balance between both the warm (yellow cast) and cool (blue cast) ends of the light spectrum Northern light is the coolest, while light from a southern exposure in the most intense. Here, direct sunlight provides the "truest" rendition of the colors in the room."

Indirect Sunlight.

"Natural sunlight is not consistent. It changes throughout the day from sunrise to sunset. The intense golden rays and subsequent distinct shadows of a sunny, late afternoon will have a profound effect on the colors of a room."

Artificial Light.

"The color rendition appears warm under incandescent and halogen lights where reds and yellows are enhanced, and blues and greens get dulled. Under the cool cast of fluorescent lights, blues and greens are enhanced and reds and yellows are muted."

It's such a good example of how light will change our perception of a color. So pretty pretty please, grab a sample and live with it for a day to see it in different light, no dirty mauve around here. (Another note, when you have green grass outside that gets close to a window, or a window that goes almost to the ground the green can reflect up to the ceiling and walls affecting the color, but that's a tough one to combat but something worth considering. Use a warmer color than you might expect to fight the cool tones in the green.)

It's been a hectic couple weeks with the plans for the store taking over my life, and honestly this isn't an idea time to be prancing off to Las Vegas with my besties.. BUT who can say no to 90degree and poolside cocktails! I'll be the first to admit those are my fave.

I'll be back on Monday amigos, have a great weekend.. in the meantime, I hope I'm not quite as 'dangerous' this weekend as LiLo (but also can't deny that she is looking hot!)...

Is Glam a Sham?

Pfffffff. No. I do love myself a little glam, but I'm having a panic claustrophobic feeling that I'm going to tire of it, like, tomorrow. So how do we do glam without being too.. glamorous??!

Are fretwork, lattice and greek-key slipping from my vocabulary? I bet the real answer is no, because they are timeless patterns, but you know what I mean (and don't hold me to it when I show you something I'm all excited about and it's a greek key something or other). For example:

I have hailed Kelly W as my chieftain for many moons on this blog, and that is still true, mostly. I think Bunny might be nudging her way in though. Bunny is still a touch too traditional for me. So what am I saying? I like BunnyGlamWearstler ~~(stripper!! name)~~ .. what does that look like?? Let me see if I can find any pics of BGW. I knew TradHome would be my one-stop-shopping. (PS, there are lots of pictures, so get ready to wait a minute for more words.)

A collected feeling will always do the trick. Wish the lamp was a little larger scale, it's too tiny. Prettty burled desk.

Loving the cafe chair.

This is a primo example of BGW. If the dresser were wood, it would have gone too traditional like tea and crumpets at brunch. But the updated finish in a classic shape makes it -ding ding ding- a winner.

Crown moulding detail needs to beat it, I love the idea, but not here. I love lamp. And the chairs are way too far away from the sofa.. maybe this space shouldn't have made the cut. Or maybe it was just tricky photography.

While not a super inviting conversational area, the silhouettes and shiny stuff is wonderful. Tempered by creamy classic walls.

This space is lovely but it barely made the BGW cut. I think it's the pale blue walls that are turning me off. The lantern and amazing mirror are making up for it though.

The black cord-cover on the chandelier is an interesting choice. I think I dig it.

So what's the moral of the story? I'm not really sure, I'm just thinking out loud here. But I think it's that a collected, global, fresh-take-on-classic-lines and rich palettes will achieve a sense of timelessness that is impossible to argue with.

And ps. I just looked at Kelly's book Domicilium Decoratus (my fave of hers published) and it (cuss word removed) blows my mind. I shouldn't have doubted her. She remains my chieftain.

1983 never looked so good..

I don't usually cast light on decorating from the 80's, probably because there's nothing that feels remarkable. I go tiny prints and floral chintz, not exactly on the top of my 'favorites' list.

But behold, the 1983 issue of House & Garden I got my paws on is chalk full of wonderful spaces. So full that I'm not going to show them all to you in just this one post.. muhahahha.

Uhm yes, that sculptured wall is amazing. The uber modern table and chairs work wonderfully traditional chandelier.

Hm, looks like we aren't the first decade to enjoy the color aubergine. And painting the fireplace mantle the same as the wall color intrigues me.

This couldn't be more classically beautiful. The dramatic screen, tuxedo sofa (that's where the arms are as high as the back) and a parsons table...oh, and a zebra rug? Here again we are not the first.

Surprise! Tony Duquette's home was featured in the issue as well. His rooms are just mind-numbingly intense. All I can see is hours and hours of design work followed by hours ad hours of cleaning. It's other-worldly, which is impressive in it's own right.

Mirrored ceiling really ups the ante here. Love the leopard on the table.

The other great thing about vintage magazines are the ads.. The first line of copy reads: "They certainly spend enough time staring at it." Hahahaah seriously?! How was this ever socially acceptable? Albeit very funny.

Day TWO.

There were really 4 days, but it feels ok to recap them into two days, is that ok with you? ok good.

So after my knees wobbled and wrists ached from carrying around 40lbs of shiny new supplier literature for 6 hours. (It really was 40lbs, I weighed my luggage at the airport. That's a disgusting amount of paper to collect, and then I had to READ it. But it's ok because they're all just picture-books, too bad they aren't pop-ups, I'd definitely buy stuff from a supplier with a pop-up catalog.)

I wanted to check out the thrifty scene down in the Land of Angels, so like a good planner I made a little list and headed out with my GPS in hand. I didn't use the list, but I found rad places on accident, which makes them better. See:

I know you can tractor-beam in on a few gems in there. Me too. But dude wanted lots for his stuff. It was the kind of place where there aren't any price tags and you just ask how much things cost. I should have taken all my bling off before going (I am usually dripping with bling in case you're wondering). None the less, it was still a good spot to see.

Squeel! Yes, I was excited about this place. But she had real price tags on thing and they burned my fingers when I touched them. But she did have some cool stuff.

Yes, some very cool stuff.

Now, lets be clear here, this place is not a "thrift" store, or even a vintage store, it is an antiques store, filled with overpriced vintage pieces. But HAWT pieces. Too bad there were three-too-many zero's on all the price tags.

Crazy watercolory sofa? I sorta liked it, not sorta, I really like it. I didn't notice the boobs on the wall I was so enamored with the sofa. I have no idea how much this cost because I stopped looking after the last place.

And this photo doesn't do any justice at all, it is Craig Olsen's space on La Brea (Craig, can we please talk about your website?? because it doesn't reflect the person I met, just sayin-). Now this might have been my most important stop in all of LA, and I didn't even know I was stopping there. I waltzed in expecting to scope things out (and did that) and then I spotted Craig and asked if he would be happy to talk with me about my Portland-Store (you know, my personl choose-your-own-adventure story). He was SO HELPFUL I WANTED TO SQUEEZE HIM, but I didn't because I'm sure it would have been weird and I would have messed up his perfect scarf and hair (both he and his sister had some serious pretty genes). Nothing can top that accidental meeting, so I headed over to Pacific Design Center from there..

*drooling on the glass*. I've seen this Hudson badboy in magazines before, in person it is TEN TIMES more beautiful. I didn't go in the showroom. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be spending tensofthousands of dollars on light fixtures, although I might offer a kidney, shoot, that probably wouldn't even cover the cost of this.

Ohhh Ironies. Pretty stuff. Almost boring though? But yes pretty.

BAM! I like gold things. This was no exception. It too was tens of thousands. (*eye roll*)

Baker Showroom was traditional as expected.

It had quickly become clear the PDC was not a place for me, other than purely inspiration, I couldn't look my clients in the eye and ask for $14,000 for a cocktail table, "and may I suggest a coaster?". So I took my little rental car down to La Cienega (and I'm sorry again, I won't remember all the names of the showrooms, speed and efficiency)...

Oh, is that a gently breeze moving the sheers? Why yes it is. And I am taking this photo from an adorable alley leading to the cutest lil courtyard you ever laid your eyes? yes I am.

Schreeeeech! Uhm, so this happened. So she's a real person? And she goes and comes from here each day? I just might stay here and hide in the bushes til i get a glimpse.

Because it's illegal to stalk people I had to move on from Kelly Wearstler studio, and onto this amazing space, I know it's fuzzy, but I was just coming from the KWID spotting, so the fuzziness is acceptable.

Good styling, not exactly screaming unique, but I still liked it, enough to take a photo obvi (and better than Ironies don't you think?).

Project and Day 1 Los Angeles.

I spent nearly all of last week in LA. And yes it was fun and sunny, but also I was there for another reason (waitttt for it). (This is the exciting news that I am still unsure about sharing? Probably because I don't know all the details just yet, but rest assured, you will all see how the entire process unfolds.) I am opening a retail store/design studio. (Que clapping and cheering.)

I went to LA to establish some new wholesale suppliers and check out their pretty design scene (La Cienega is a street that's lined with some of the CUTEST design showrooms EVER). My goals while I was there?: to steal the good ideas and import them to Portland.

(I'll apologize in advance for the horrible iphone pics, but I took over 200 and it was all about being speedy and efficient while tromping around the city.)

This piece is GORGEOUS in person. Might be a little out of the price range I'd like to be in, but it was jaw dropping.

...heading to the manufacturing facility for a company that is going to produce some Private Label pieces for me. (that's sounds so fancy!)

All the pieces are produced in Los Angeles, not China. SOLD! A glimpse into the working facility.

Mid-Year Must-Haves

It's already the end of May!!?? (Perhaps I'm confused because the weather is certainly more March feeling..) Anywho, we all make predictions as the calendar turns from December to January about the upcoming trends, why not check-in midway through the year? I'm going to highlight a few things I see happening in design land (is there any other land?)..

1) Malachite

I think this vivid and organic pattern is about to break-through. I haven't seen a ton of it around, but I'd bet my bottom dollar that it'll start showing up more often over the next year.

2) Scales:

(Arteriors Orleans Iron table.)

Not the kind that weigh you (thank goodness!), but the fish kind. This age-old pattern has been in hiding the last few years, I'm think it's gonna climb that fish ladder.

3) This is a little more broad, but color palettes are leaving the safer neutrals behind and skipping into playful brights (and more in-depth and complicated palettes in general).

4) The french are taking over! Well, in designland.

A serious return to ornate and carved pieces, feminine and velvety all up in your face. Get on board with this, because it's not going anywhere.

5) Pa-Pa-Pa-Pattern!

Hell ya. I have to do so much convincing in the pattern arena. People are getting more adventurous.

6) Trophy Wives.

Just kidding, but we are going to see plenty of trophies and equestrian accents in the upcoming year (think plaid too).

7) Bringing the tribe home.

Not the kids, but textures and pattern from all over the world- especially Native American pattern (think updated SW style) and African. (Ikat kicked this trend into high-gear a year ago.)

There is a big feeling of lightening up, people want to come home to a comfortable but exciting space, gone are the days of the beige box, we want life at home.

But the St.Hilaire church is (appropriately) heaven-sent.

The marble mass undulates inside the antique romanesque church in France (it also conjures up memories of building topography models, which were my favorite part of architecture school).

I love the vivid mix of modern and classical design. The muted colors help tie the project together.

Yep, that's a topo model if I ever saw one.

Aside from my distaste for building the models, this final product is soft and beautiful.

Quite sprititual.

Practical Polly: Creating a Design Plan

When you walk into your new house, a new apartment or if you're just tired of your current space, it's time to create a Design Plan. A blank canvas can be (very) overwhelming, so try following these steps and you will be on your way to having your own design plan. You can chisel away at your own project, and suddenly you're making decisions like brushed nickel or polished chrome.

1. Measure your space and draw a floor plan. You'll also need to draw elevations of each wall (the vertical surface). It makes a big difference if the bottom of a window is 20" from the ground or 40" from the ground, so this is an important step. Note the ceiling height too. (Drawing your floor plan to-scale will come in handy later on.)

2) Make a list of the pieces you want in the space, e.g. a sofa, (2) chairs, a coffee table, a side table, a piece for the tv to sit on, an ottoman, an 8'x10' rug.. etc. Worry about accessories later, this is the time for the larger pieces that will define the space.

3) Make cutouts of the shapes and sizes of the pieces you'll need (also to-scale), then shift them around inside your floor plan until you've decided which pieces will fit and where you want them to go. (Some pieces will need to be modified or swapped out, and some will be eliminated entirely.) You can use standard sizes of furniture to start, you don't have to know exactly what you want before this step (it's actually easier if you don't already know what you want. You'll be able to make shopping decisions based on what the layout calls for.) Here is a source for graph paper and template for furniture, it looks something like this:

A few tricks to keep in mind when you're space planning: 1) Establishing a focal point will help in creating your floor plan. 2) The doorways/openings will direct flow, try not to interrupt the natural traffic patterns. 3) The center of the tele should be about 36" off the ground -not over a fireplace- it's just too high and will be uncomfortable to watch (but live-able if you have to). 4) A sofa can 'float' in the room and doesn't need to be backed up to a wall, this usually makes for a much more dynamic space. If you do float your sofa, you'll will need a console table behind it to 'finish' it.

4) GO SHOPPING! Yay. But oy vey, now you need to make decisions based on the style and mood you want to create (and the sizes you've determined you need). This can be tough, so play around with some of the online mood-board programs out there like OlioBoard. Also find inspiration in magazines and blogs, don't forget it doesn't have to be a room that inspires you, it can be anything. I wrote a post on how to find inspiration for a space, read it here.

5) This is the part where you have to wait patiently. Because unless you're buying everything from IKEA, you'll probably have to order a few pieces, 4-8 weeks is standard for delivery.

6) Now that your large pieces are on their way, you can flirt with the window treatments and accessories. Try not to buy everything from one store or else it may come across as too showroom-y; collections over time will make your home speak volumes about your own personality. Don't forget that lighting is critical for creating mood in your space, so add dimmers to your switches and plenty of floor lamps and table lamps.

...that Barcelona is home to some of the most amazing spaces my eyes ever get the chance to see...

(that chandelier!!) And love that there's no candles on the candle sticks.

There's really a feeling of glam but comfortable too. So good.

The weathered chairs plus headless figure make me happy.

A petite aqua kitchen seems to fit right in.

Oy, this space really gets my heart pounding. Love the easy bed.

Ah! A vintage dressform to hold necklaces is a genius idea. Echoed with the burlap stool makes the effort feel connected throughout the space.

How was your weekend? Mine was crazy hectic trying to finish a few things before leaving this week for a trip to LA related to some recent business developments. When I learn a little more I will share with you! It's exciting, well, I'm excited 'bout it :)

Concrete Blocks.

I don't know about you, but when I think of concrete blocks, my first thought is of foundations for houses, followed quickly by images of sinking to the bottom of the ocean, looking up at the surface wondering whether I will manage to free myself from the chains the bad-guy put on me. Welp. Moving right along.

You cannot argue with how amazing this space is. If I remember correctly, it's from a long-ago issue of Elle Decor and the architect used the concrete block to mitigate the view of the in-your-face building next door (see, sometimes I read the words too). The bertoia chairs echo the same transparency.

Soft blush and gray are doing a little lotus dance.

Lotus is available in 30 colorways, they weren't messing around, 30 is a boatload! AND you can get it in a smaller print or a larger print. I like the larger, duh.

The lotus print feels like an updated damask print, and there has been plenty of damask to go around the last few years, so a little updating is nice.

Interior Architecture vs Design vs Decorating.

There is always plenty of discussion humming around the difference between Interior Design and Interior Decorating, sometimes the dividing line is very blurry between the two. And then there is a whole different beast that is Interior Architecture. Design and Decorating are often co mingled, but Interior Architecture cannot be swapped with Decorating, ever (albeit, simply drawing walls into floor plans is not Architecture, that is drafting).
Interior Architecture is heavily driven by a single, all encompassing concept. Interior Design uses a global stylistic approach that includes decorating. It's not uncommon to move walls around to maximize the use of the space. Decorating is the finishing touch, including accessories and furnishings; this doesn't usually include construction.

Design and Decorating are about style, Architecture is about concept.

To illustrate Interior Architecture, we can quickly find examples in public libraries, museums and religious buildings, these are often are very concept-driven.

Interior Architecture makes reference to the exterior shell. For example, we wouldn't expect to see straight columns and square walls inside the Denver Art Museum (and rightfully so).

Local architectural star (to Portlanders) is Jeff Kovel of Skylab Architecture, he knows his way around the business of Interior Architecture. In coordination with other renowned designers, Kovel designed Departure (a roof-top restaurant in Portalnd), with an obvious concept that is to ship the guest to another world, on a futuristic-yet-classic ship.. here are some of the photos of the space (it really is outstanding):

The entrance is on the 15th floor of The Nines Hotel, this is the greeting once off the elevator, ready to export you...

The references to a ships are apparent in the teak floors and murals of maps..

It's futuristic and classic at once. A successful example of concept-driven Interior Architecture & Design. (round of applause ensues).

There are some seriously good things going on here..

One being those very tall ivory screens and black lampshades. I swear a black lampshade is a little bit magical.

Look at those steel doors! HAWT! Not totally sold on the piece of art though..

The mix of industrial and traditional here is noteworthy. I'm taking notes.

Ahhhh a grand finale. This sapce is SO so so good. And also has the magical black lamp. Magic I tell you.

Holi Festival

Practical Polly: Bookshelf Basics

I recently installed two bookshelves into my own home, flanking a fireplace. I learned a little lesson. They can look messy, reallllly fast (julie panic). So here are the rules I used to make sure they don't look muddled and messy..

1) Keep the accessories a limited color palette.

(A stylists secret for this is to turn the books around, so the colorful spines are facing the back, and the yellowed/cream pages are facing the room.)

2) Visually anchor the bottom shelf with large geometric objects; like baskets or boxes, or even stacked hardcover books.

3) Use a variety of sculpture, textures and books. The horns below bring the fun, red (ikea!) bookcase to life.

4) Shed some light on it. This rule is so important that if you had only ONE RULE to follow, it's this one.

There are a few ways to light a bookcase; 1) hard wire it directly into the bookcase with sconces, puck lights or art lighting. Some units come with lights built-in. A note: glass shelves will let the light flow throughout the bookcase, while wooden shelves will prevent the light from bouncing around multiple shelves. 2) You can also install recessed lights or spot lights that aim towards the bookshelf. 3) Use small table lamps or plug-in spot lights (lots available at Ikea) that are intended for lighting small areas- such as bookshelves.

5) A common mistake: Too perfect.

Looks like Mrs. Pottery Barn came over for a glass of wine, and she styled your bookcase while you were chatting. This works for catalogs, but for your house, you should fill your shelves over time with mementos you've collected. A manufactured installation will read and fakey and predictable and = no personality. A bare shelf is better than a fake one.
