tips + tricks: out-of-proportion ceiling height.

Tall ceilings are my best friend. It's like having long legs, they're just plain sexy. BUT, sometimes smallish rooms with tallish ceilings can leave the room feeling like Alice when she drank the potion that made her too small for her surroundings. It can leave the furniture feeling the same drugged effects- just too small.

Sometimes we need to bring our wonderfully long legs back to human height (really, this is a good problem to have- in the human case or the room case). The best way to do this (ohmygosh don't you DARE install some sort of false ceiling) is to add a touch of moulding (aka picture rail) at your desired height, 9'-10' is about right for an average room. Then paint the ceiling, new moulding and the space above your new moulding all the same color (and any other trim in between, such a crown moulding). Speaking of crown, this is a wonderful opportunity to install some beefy crown moulding because, baby, you got those long legs- might as well flaunt 'em.

This is a good solution. It reminds me of using board and batten upside down. Thanks for the tip!
